Development speed in Himachal Pradesh: Need direction, vision and vision
An Editorial Perspective Editor Ram Prakash Vats
Himachal Pradesh is a quiet, natural and cultural heritage-filled state known as Devbhoomi. But, behind this beauty there are many challenges of growth. Despite limited resources, difficult geographical conditions and climate disasters, the state is on the path of continuous progress, but current conditions need to accelerate the pace of development — that too under the model of balanced, inclusive, and sustainable development.
(Infrastructure: The first ladder of progress in the mountains)
The foundation of development lies on the infrastructure. Many rural areas in Himachal Pradesh are still deprived of good roads, stable electricity and reliable internet connectivity. Road construction is difficult and costly due to mountainous territories, but it is also necessary. The government will need to adopt sustainable construction models to increase contact from state borders to remote villages — such as pre-fabricated structures, tunnel-based routes and eco-sufficient bridges. High-speed internet should reach every panchayat under Digital India, bringing transparency and efficiency in education, business and administration.
(Education: The Key to Human Resource Development)
Himachal is counted among the best performing states in education sector, but with quality, the long way to go. Lack of teachers, lack of digital resources, and limited access to professional education give state youth limited alternatives. Every district should establish Model Schools and Skill Development Centers that teach new technologies — such as AI, robotics, agricultural innovation and tourism management —. Preparing technical courses in local language will also make students easier to learn.
(Health: Decentralized System Required)
The Covid-19 pandemic has made it clear that investment in the health system is not an option, but a compulsory. Primary health services in remote areas of Himachal are still unsatisfactory. A strong decentralized health system can be created by deploying trained community health workers in telemedicine, mobile health clinics and rural areas. District hospitals should be converted to special treatment centers so state citizens do not have to go to Chandigarh or Delhi for treatment.
(Employment: The biggest challenge to stop migration)
There is no shortage of talent in the youth of Himachal, but the limitation of industrial opportunities in the state convinces them to go out. Local employment can be increased by promoting Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in small towns and towns. Agriculture-based industry, branding organic products, processing Himalayan herbs and eco-tourism are sectors that can lead the state to economic self-reliance. For this, the government will not only give grants, but also ensure market access and marketing assistance.
It is proud that the development journey of Himachal Pradesh can be intensified not only by government plans and announcements, but by local participation, scientific thinking and long-term policy. Improvement in infrastructure, education, health and employment cannot be seen differently from each other, these four are complementary to each other. The beauty of Himachal will remain permanent only when the citizen here will prosper economically, socially and mentally. This will be true and inclusive development.
